Astech Projects New 3D Printing Facility

The industrial strength printer utilises a dual head system with a Continuous Filament Fabrication (CFF) print head and a Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) extrusion head to create robust parts by leveraging the properties of composite materials with a higher strength-to-weight ratio than 6061-T6 Aluminium. Printing can be performed using a suite of materials, including reinforcing fibres such as Carbon Fibre, Kevlar and Fibre-glass.

Managing Director, Chris Hansford commented, “By bringing 3D printing capabilities in house and investing in a high specification printing facility, we are able to print parts quickly and cost effectively not only for proof of concept and prototype activities, but also for specialist parts that can be used on final system builds”. He continued “From a Client perspective, we expect the introduction of this technology to improve our lead times, increase our ability to react quickly to changing requirements and improve audience visualisation of engineering concepts and techniques during design. As a Company, we expect this investment to allow our Engineers to be even more inventive and bold in their design ideas. It will encourage a greater selection of design concepts to be reduced to practice and tested, thereby reducing reliance on theory based reviews alone”.
