Astech designed and supplied a robotic machine cell for the purpose of automatic insertion and machine vision inspection of fasteners integral to the precision manufacture of commercial aircraft engines. The machine cell included a 6-axis robotic arm for handling and accurately positioning the fasteners. Attached to the robotic arm was a pneumatic tool change mechanism to handle several components, alongside a machine vision inspection system to identify insertion location and correct fitment of the fasteners. Fasteners were automatically presented to the cell using a vibratory bowl feeder. An automated weighing module was also integrated to provide verification of fitted fastener quantities.
